It’s Not Just About Sin—It’s About Weight

Why Spiritual Weight Is Slowing You Down

There is a version of faith that reduces everything down to one question: is it a sin?

And if the answer is no, we move on like it does not matter.

But that is not how Jesus Christ taught. Not even close.

The Verse That Says More Than Most People Notice

The line often attributed to Jesus, “Since we’re surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,” actually comes from the Epistle to the Hebrews.

But the principle is completely aligned with how He lived and taught. Because the passage does not just say avoid sin. It says: lay aside every weight and the sin. Not just what is wrong. But what is holding you back.

The Question Most Christians Never Think to Ask

We have been trained to ask whether something is allowed, whether it is wrong, whether it is a sin.

But the deeper question is: is this slowing me down?

Because something can be legal, acceptable, and common and still be counterproductive to who you are called to become.

What the Apocrypha Says About Discipline and Restraint

The Apocrypha carries this same weight of wisdom, especially in the Book of Sirach: “Do not follow your base desires, but restrain your appetites.”

And echoing the broader wisdom tradition: the one who masters himself is greater than one who takes a city.

The point is clear. Not everything that is permitted is beneficial.

Freedom Is Not the Goal: Transformation Is

You can eat what you want. Drink what you want. Watch what you want. That is not the argument.

The question is: what is it doing to you?

Because if something dulls your clarity, weakens your discipline, distracts your focus, or drains your energy, then it may not be sin. But it is still weight. And weight will slow you down every time.

You Cannot Run Carrying Everything: The Weight That Quietly Works Against You

The imagery matters. You were not called to stroll casually through life. You were called to run. With purpose. With direction. With endurance.

And you cannot run effectively while holding onto things that are quietly working against you.

Some people do not fail because of sin. They fail because of excess weight.

New Wine Requires a New Structure: What Jesus Said About Expansion

Jesus Christ said you cannot pour new wine into old wineskins. Why? Because the structure cannot handle the expansion. It will break.

So if God is trying to do something new in your life, increase your capacity, your responsibility, your influence, then something has to change. Not just externally. Internally.

Where Obedience Actually Begins: Aligning With Where You Are Going

Obedience is not just about avoiding what is wrong. It is about aligning with what is right for where you are going.

Because God’s love is not passive. It is directional. He is not just trying to keep you from falling. He is trying to move you forward.

Stop Asking Only If It Is a Sin: Ask If It Is Helping You Run

God may not be asking you to remove something because it is evil. But because it is heavy.

And where you are going, you will not get there carrying everything.
